Hi Marie,

I would love to see the pictures of your roses. Maybe you could send them to my memberbox if you don't plan to post them.

Gruß! Linda

Thanks for the picture, Volker. It reminds me of my "Kiel" days a bit. I'd never make it on a ship -- I'd sink it with the weight of all my books I'd be dragging along with me!!

Thanks Volker. The author of the translation you chose, Stephen Mitchell, is considered to be one of the best English translators of Rilke, and he is usually pretty close to the mark. Thanks for your confirmation. You have such a good grip of English, I can't help but wonder if you don't teach it. A...

Hello again, "mystery" woman! As I mentioned, I don't know how to address you now. I will still think of you as Marie until you let me know how you would like for me to refer to you. I know you are not trying to convince me or anyone else for that matter to believe in your convictions or in reincara...

Rose, oh reiner Widerspruch

Hello Volker, Marie, and everyone else! How would you translate Rilke’s epitaph into English or which of the following translations (from various books) do you think is most fitting? The main problem is with the word “Lust” because there are so many possible words that could be used in English. Rose...

Hello, my friend, the former Marie (I don’t know how to address you now!) I am both happy and relieved to read that you will indeed still be in the forum! Today I will attempt to read again what you wrote and struggle to understand it (looking up a whole lot of words would help!) I think I did...

Duino

Liebe Marie, Needless to say, I’m not sure I completely understood what you were saying (because of my problems with German), but what I was able to understand is very interesting, and I certainly wouldn’t rule out that something like that is possible. I have to admit it gave me chills as I read it....

Thanks Marie, That was very helpful. One last question - is Nirgendssein a word you have heard used outside of Rilke's poetry? Today I listened to the first five Duino Elegies on cassette while walking (translated into English by Stephen Mitchell), and they are so awesome! Of course, it was too much...

Taube, die draußen blieb

Hallo everyone! I have a couple of questions regarding the following poem. First of all, the word "Taube" is listed in the dictionary as both "dove" and "pigeon," so how do you differentiate between the two? How do you know which one it means? Personally, I think dove sounds more poetic, but I think...

Hi again, Just a couple more thoughts in regards to what you wrote. I feel pretty much the same way you do about Rilke's shortcomings or weaknesses. I tend not to be too critical of him. And after all, we all have our faults, but more than anything, I think we can overlook a lot in view of his treme...

Hi Marie, I didn't know that Rilke was ever interested in the Islamic religion. I'd be interested to know more about this. What little I know about his religious views comes from the introduction to the Book of Hours (Das Stundenbuch). The authors of the book (Anita Barrows/Joann Macy) mention that ...
