Herbst Abend

Hallo,

Does anyone have the short poem "Herbst Abend" that they could place in the forum for me. It is from the "Nachlaß" and was written in Paris in September 1907.

Vielen Dank im Voraus,

Linda

Hi Marie, You mentioned the poem “Da Steht der Tod” a while back, and I wanted to share a few words with you from one of my Rilke books concerning that poem. They are probably already familiar to you, but I thought I’d share them anyway. A comment from Princess Marie von Thurn regarding the poem “Da...

Hi, it's me again. I forgot to mention that I also want to know what happened that changed Rilke's religious views. I suspect that it perhaps had something to do with Lou-Andreas Salome, though I haven't read enough to know yet. What I mean is that he seemed to be so into the Christian faith when he...

Hi Marie, The word that you were looking for is "worldview" (Weltanschauung). And everything you expressed about the mysticism of Rilke's poetry and his philosophical views is exactly the same way I feel. That is why I am so drawn to Rilke's poetry. When I first discovered his poetry, I immediately ...

Hi Marie, I really like your interpretation of this poem!. It’s very interesting and helpful in understanding the poem. I’m afraid I often get so bogged down in the translation of Rilke’s poems, that I never get around to interpreting them. Also, it is always nice to hear someone else’s interpretati...

Hi Volker, Thanks for your comments. There are always so many different choices for a word in the dictionary, that I am never sure which one to choose. For example, these are the choices for Geschicklichkeit in my dictionary: skill, skillfulness, ability, cleverness, slickness, expertness, subtlety....

Hallo Volker and Marie, Another question -- In regards to the first line of this poem, is there really any need to add "yourself" or "at yourself" to this line? Does "Selbstgeworfnes" imply you are throwing something at or to yourself or simply that you are the one doing the throwing? If you say "As...

Hi Marie and Volker, First let me say that your translation was excellent Volker, and I am amazed at how quickly you were able to come up with it. Below is what I came up with (with the help of your translation) and Marie’s very helpful explanation of words and concepts. But first a few words about ...

Hi Marie and Volker, Thanks to both of you for the translations and explanations. That was really a quick translation Volker. I had just finished looking up all of the words I didn't know, and was just getting ready to see what I could come up with. Your translation made that process much easier for...

“Solang du Selbstgeworfnes fängst"

Hi Marie, I am copying this poem to a new topic as requested along with your comment as follows: This poem was written in 1922 just before Rilke finished the Elegies, that's why it's defined as an "Auftaktgedicht" (up-beat poem?) (See below) “Solang du Selbstgeworfnes fängst, ist alles Geschicklichk...

Hi Marie, Don't feel bad. It's okay. Once again, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your willingness to speak English and the way both you and Volker have helped me. I am so glad I discovered this site. I think it's time to come up with another new topic. I'll have to look through my Rilke poems...

Hi Volker, This is really an excellent translation! I'm impressed! Your comments are also right on target. In addition to what you said, I think there is also the feeling that the choice made in this decision was perhaps not the most popular choice nor the choice that others might have made (the les...

Hi Marie, You have no idea how long it took me to translate the above -- at least half a day. I had to look up 41 words in the dictionary, and even then I was often unsure which definition was the correct choice. I still think your English is excellent, and certainly far, far better than I could eve...

Hallo Marie, No problem. I won't use the "Wichtig" button anymore. I didn't know that's what it's for. In fact, I posted a note to Volker I believe it was asking about this button. In English it simply says "Sticky." (the buttons are in English for me as I chose English for the board language ...
