Hi Volker, Glad you liked the poems. I really like Emily Dickinson too. I forgot to mention that she lived from 1830-1886, so many of the words she uses are no longer in use today. I even had to look up a couple of words myself. I'd never heard of "tippet" or "tulle." Also, don't know if you're fami...

Ach in der Kindheit, Gott: wie warst du leicht

Hallo, Does anyone have this poem (in the German) that they could post on the Forum. I believe it comes from the Nachlaß/Entwürfen: "Ach in der Kindheit, Gott: wie warst du leicht" Ich wäre sehr dankbar dafür. Ich habe das Gedicht auf English, möchte es aber auf Deutsch gern lesen. Vielen Dank im Vo...

Hi Volker, I hope you got the two English poems I sent to you. They didn't show up in my "sent box" afterwards so I wasn't sure. Let me know if you didn't receive them. Liebe Grüße, Linda P.S. Could you give me some other ideas for the "greeting line?" I have no idea what is appropriate and in which...

Hi Marie, I have attempted to translate what you wrote to me in German a couple of days ago. I don’t know how close this is to what you were actually trying to say, but could you please make any changes necessary, as I was very unsure which word to choose in many cases? Don’t hesitate to completely ...

Hi Marie,

Wow! That's awesome that your husband is an English teacher. No wonder your English is so good!

Liebe Grüße,

Linda

Hi Volker and Marie I'll see what I can come with in the way of poems tomorrow, Volker. Were you able to understand "The Road Not Taken?" The french poem above is from the book "Rilke Werke Kommentierte Ausgabe in vier Bänden - Supplementband Gedichte in französischer Sprache mit Prosübertragungen."...

Hi Marie,

Is "die Winde drehen sich" a German expression or a Rilke creation? Either way, I like it!

Thanks and many greetings,

Linda

Hi Volker, You wrote: <Widerspruch = contradiction, alright. ... zu Widerspruche is dative case, same like "im Gange" (You could also say "im Gang"). But the "e" isn't used anymore in everyday speech. > See, I told you my German isn't very good! I had forgotten that "zu" takes the dative case. I rea...

Hi again Volker and Marie, I was wondering if either of you are familiar with any of Rilke's French poems? This is one of my favorites, and it seems to go along with "Du im voraus verlorne Geliebte" and "An die Erwartete." Die, die nicht gekommen ist, war sie nicht trotzdem gut darin, mein Herz zu o...

Hi Marie, Thanks again for more flowers. They are definitely roses! I think Rilke’s use of the word “Bezug” is one of those words than someone who doesn’t speak German very well would never be able to figure out. I’m so glad you explained it. Just to show you how far off my German is, while waiting ...

Hi Volker, Would you like for me to send you a couple more of my favorite poems in English, or would you like to have some time to digest the first one? If so, just let me know when you're ready for more. What did you think about the Cliff Crego comment about poetry in other languages? Liebe Grüße, ...

Hi Marie,

Thanks for your comments about the first line of the poem. They were very, very helpful. Perhaps I will continue to respond to only a few lines at a time. It is perhaps easier that way and not so overwhelming.

Liebe Grüße,

Give Your Heart A Sign

Hi Marie, We have been writing so much, it's getting hard to remember where to post a reply! Maybe we should start a new topic. This one is getting rather long anyway. In regards to the poem you translated, I really like it, although it is somewhat difficult for me to understand, even in English. I ...

Favorite English Poem

Hi again, Volker, One of my favorite poems in English is the very well known, "The Road Not Taken," by Robert Frost. Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; The...
